Spirulina Doubts
What is spirulina?
Spirulina, scientifically known as Arthrospira Platensis , is a cyanobacteria that has been around for approximately 3.5 billion years. Although it is often classified as a microalgae , it is actually a cyanobacteria. It was discovered in lakes around the world and is one of the first life forms to perform photosynthesis and release oxygen into the atmosphere. Spirulina is part of an ancient and unique family of organisms that have played a fundamental role in the history of life on Earth.
Why is it considered a superfood?
Spirulina is considered a superfood for its impressive nutritional content and numerous health benefits . It is a powerful source of antioxidants such as vitamin E and beta-carotene, which protect cells from oxidative stress. Phycocyanin, known as "blue gold", also present in spirulina, offers antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, in addition to strengthening the immune system . Rich in easily assimilated proteins , it helps increase muscle mass and improves sports performance and muscle recovery. Its high iron content reduces fatigue and provides energy.
Is it a new superfood?
Not at all! In fact, it is one of the oldest inhabitants of the planet . It emerged 3.5 billion years ago, acting as an evolutionary bridge between bacteria and green plants. Throughout history , it has nourished diverse cultures in Africa, the Middle East and America. It arose naturally in alkaline lakes where it has been renewed for billions of years.
Spirulina was used by the Aztecs as currency and was incorporated into their daily diet. When the Spanish arrived in America, they found that the Aztecs highly appreciated “ Tecuitlatl ,” the name by which they knew this blue-green algae. They collected it in lakes and dried it in the form of cakes or breads that they used as basic food. They also consumed it directly, mixed with drinks or incorporating it into various dishes.
The largest concentrations are found in places such as Lake Texcoco in Mexico , Lake Chad in Central Africa , and the Rift Valley in East Africa.
What is spirulina made of?
- High-quality proteins : They make up between 50% and 70% of its dry weight, including essential amino acids such as lysine, leucine and phenylalanine. They help in building and repairing tissues, as well as muscle growth.
- Vitamins : Vitamin B12, vitamin E and provitamin A (beta-carotene) stand out, which are key antioxidants for cellular health and protection against aging. All the ones it contains are ProA, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B9, B12, K and E.

- Beta-carotene: Equivalent to the beta-carotene content in 6 carrots .
What types of spirulina exist?
Considering the form of production, it is necessary to differentiate between artisanal and industrial .
Artisanal production corresponds to approximately 1% of world production. Revival produces in an artisanal way! And it is the only type of spirulina that can guarantee maximum safety and maximum benefits .
The industrial production of spirulina mostly comes from Asian countries where food safety standards and high temperature processing result in spirulina of very dubious quality . Unfortunately this is the type found in health food stores and supermarkets.
The types of spirulina according to their processing are:
- Spirulina in strands : this format guarantees that the processing has been artisanal. It is not very common. It is dehydrated at a low temperature, preserving all its nutrients much better. It is perfect to add to salads, toasts, yogurts, also providing a touch of color and crunchy texture. At Revival we sell it in different sizes .
- Spirulina in tablets : this format is one of the most popular due to its ease of consumption. After drying, it is ground and compressed into small tablets. It is especially recommended for those who prefer a precise dosage. At Revival you can buy them in different formats.
- Fresh spirulina : It is the hardest to find, it only hurts to be available in areas where it is grown locally. This fresh form has no flavor, it adds unctuousness to dishes and the best thing is that it is the format that best preserves all the properties of spirulina. It is our preferred format and we are working to market it soon!
- Spirulina powder : After drying, it is powdered, for easy addition to smoothies, juices, baked foods and other dishes. Be careful, the taste of industrial spirulina in this format is not pleasant. Bet on artisanal spirulina.
Why does the UN consider it the best food of the future?

Spirulina is no exception: it is mostly produced industrially in Asian countries where food safety measures are not as strict as here, and spirulina is grown outdoors without being protected from things that can fall into it and with water which may contain heavy metals . Don't risk it, go for artisanal spirulina made in Spain , like Revival.
Artisanal Spirulina Revival:
- It is grown in small ponds protected by greenhouses with water from the Sierra de las Nieves National Park .
- After harvesting, it is dehydrated at a low temperature (<40°C) to preserve all its properties.
- Nutty flavor due to the quality of the water and the gentle harvesting and dehydration.
- We shape it into crispy strands by hand.
- 100% pure spirulina, without dyes, pesticides, preservatives, binders or additives.
- Sustainable cultivation with the environment and produced in Spain under strict European quality laboratory analysis.
Why should you avoid industrial spirulina?
There are many reasons why you should not consume industrial spirulina:
- It is grown in large ponds outdoors, coexisting with any animal that falls into them (insects, rodents, birds, etc...).

- Bitter taste and fishy smell due to oxidation during drying.
- Form of pills , capsules or insoluble powder .
- It is not 100% spirulina, it is common to find binders and additives in the pills.
- 90% is grown in China and India, countries with insufficient health controls and poor water quality .
Why is water quality so important in spirulina production?
Water quality is crucial because that is where spirulina grows. At Revival Spirulina we use water that comes from the Sierra de las Nieves National Park , which guarantees water of the highest quality. This way we ensure that spirulina is free of contaminants and pathogens, and that it maintains its purity and is completely safe for consumption. Additionally, clean, nutrient -rich water improves the growth and nutritional value of spirulina, ensuring a final product with good flavor and appearance. Make sure your spirulina is produced in Spain to avoid potential problems.
How can I know if spirulina is industrial?
